Are you taking it one day at a time? Has your living room turned into a playground, and is the washing machine running non-stop? Same here!

Convinced that getting nice photos of your kids and family right now is unrealistic? Like managing to drink a cup of coffee before it goes cold, a professional photo shoot can feel like an impossible dream.

Does this sound familiar?

Hi, i am nicola (and this is my family)

Mom of 4 and award-winning family photographer

I know exactly how challenging it can be to make family photos happen — and I know exactly how much a photo like that means.

In 2022, I was named one of the top 10 in the Lifestyle Photographers Association. I teach photographers both in Norway and internationally in the field of family photography and video, and have taught in the large American photography network ‘The Motherhood Anthology.’

In other words: when you book me, you can rest assured that you’re getting quality from start to finish.

I live in Nærsnes, not far from Oslo, with my wonderful, vibrant, international, multilingual and multicultural family — and we’re always dreaming about our next trip. I love children, the beach, breakfast at any hour of the day, and genuine emotions.

Love Notes

Thank you so much for capturing our family so beautifully. The years with little ones go by far too fast, and it means so much to me to have photos like these to look back on and remember this time.

Family pictures in a nutshell…

We skip the stiff, posed family portraits. We go straight for the real, warm moments. Every family photo session naturally includes a classic ‘grandma shot’ where everyone looks straight at the camera – because we all know grandma expects it, right?

From there, we let the mood lead the way, and I promise you an experience filled with closeness, laughter, and beautiful memories.

What if we’re not comfortable in front of the camera?

I know that being photographed can feel unfamiliar or a little awkward for many people, but you are far from alone in feeling that way! We keep it playful and relaxed, and I have lots of little tricks that create beautiful, genuine moments between you as a family — moments I capture on camera. And you know what? Almost every single time, I get a message afterward from families saying: ‘That was actually so much more fun than we expected!’

I also know how stressful it can be to get the whole family ready for a photo session. It often feels like an endless list of things to remember. What helps me most is making a checklist and planning outfits well in advance. This also means you have one less thing to dread.

Once the session itself gets started, you can let go of all your worries. That’s when it’s my job to guide you through the whole process. I’ll tell you what to do and make sure everything flows naturally. There’s no pressure — you literally cannot do anything wrong.

What should we wear for a family photo session?

What you choose to wear matters a lot — it has a big impact on the mood of the photos! I’m here to offer advice and guidance throughout the whole process, and you can also find extra inspiration in this blog post. If you’d rather not buy new clothes, I have a selection of outfits you’re welcome to borrow.

Generally, soft, earthy tones work best and give the photos a calm, natural feel. Avoid large logos and bold patterns, as these can draw attention away from what really matters — you! Knitted fabrics and light, flowing materials are perfect choices, as they add movement and texture to the photos while keeping the outfits simple and elegant.

What if my child isn’t having a good day when we take the family photos?

It is always my highest priority that children feel safe and comfortable. Some days just don’t click — I know how it is! But you don’t need to worry, because there are many ways to connect with kids who might not be quite in the mood for photos.

Let’s be honest: it’s hard to get great pictures if the kids aren’t cooperating. That’s why I always start by getting to know them at their own pace. I often let the kids take the very first photo themselves — something most of them find really fun! I love working with children, including those who are extra energetic or a little tricky, and I have yet to experience a session where we haven’t managed to create magical moments.

And if the kids are having a really tough day where nothing seems to help? No need to stress! We make the best of the situation, and in the very rare cases where it simply isn’t working, we find another day. The most important thing to me is that the photo session is a positive and enjoyable experience for the whole family!

FAQ about family pictures in Oslo

If rain is forecast, we’ll move the session to a new time. I keep an eye on the weather forecast and will let you know the day before if there’s a chance we may need to postpone. Should something come up that prevents you from going ahead with the session, I ask that you let me know at least 24 hours in advance. If the kids get sick or something unexpected happens, just reach out as soon as you know — these things happen, and we’ll simply find another day that works.

There are several small things you can do to make the session easier and more relaxed. A good start is to bring a little bag with snacks, water, and a few small surprises — maybe a toy or some treats — to help keep the kids focused and having fun. If the kids are old enough, it can be a good idea to prepare them a little beforehand. Tell them what’s going to happen, and how much these photos mean to you. Some families also like to arrange a small reward afterwards, like an ice cream.
The most important thing is that the kids are fed and well-rested when you arrive. And remember — it doesn’t matter if things don’t go entirely to plan! Children are spontaneous, and the day rarely turns out exactly as you imagined. I have four children myself and know just how unpredictable it can be. We roll with it, and I promise to capture beautiful moments regardless. My goal is to make the session a enjoyable and stress-free experience for you!

A photo session typically takes around one hour, but it completely depends on the children. Sometimes we get beautiful and varied shots in just 30 minutes, while more introverted children may need a little more time — and that’s perfectly fine!

Most people choose to come to Bygdøy, where the beautiful and varied nature provides stunning backdrops. If you’d prefer to have the photos taken at your home or another location that holds special meaning for your family, I’m happy to come to you.
